I was told to choose a rather mundane activity that I do everyday (i.e. commuting to work) and record it visually and in writing for a week because I will be designing a book around it. I decided to record my love/hate relationship with the gym. Everyone who goes to the gym can relate. It’s a pain to get up and go to the gym, but you know you should and you’ll feel better if you do. But, I’m still convinced I’m supposed to be fat, I like food too much.
I decided from the beginning that I would be using my cell phone for all the images. And this was for a variety of reasons. Mainly, taking photos inside a gym is sort of, well, rude and wouldn’t go over too well with my gym and it’s patrons. And a cell phone would let me be more discreet. Also, I liked the look of the photos because they weren’t extremely high res, which is a look I wanted for this book. I chose a bright color palette to show how I should be feeling about the gym. Excited! Pumped! But in reading the text and seeing the images you notice, this isn’t exactly what it appears to be. I also included some handwriting as part of the typography of the book, which was from the diary I was keeping for the week.
